Archer Wunderle advances to round of 16
By Mary Beth Vorwerk // USA Archery // August 16, 2004
ATHENS, Greece – The men’s round of 32 took place today and extremely windy conditions made shooting very difficult for the second day in a row at Panathinaiko Stadium. Vic Wunderle was the only U.S. man to win his match, advancing to tomorrow’s round of 16.
Forty-third ranked Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.), the 2000 individual silver and team bronze medalist, faced India’s Majhi Sawaiyan, who was ranked 22nd coming in, and won the match easily 145-128.
“With the wind being so crazy, the scores are much lower than what you expect to see in Olympic competition, said Wunderle.” “It’s like playing rock, paper scissors for the championship.”
Having already won a silver and bronze medal in Sydney, Wunderle says his goal in Athens is to “complete the set” and take home a gold.
Wunderle will face 11th ranked Ming Huang Liu (TPE) at 3:57 p.m. tomorrow in the round of 16. Liu beat 54th ranked Ken Uprichard (NZL) 148-144 today.
Ranked 47th coming into his match, John Magera (Carterville, Ill.) faced 18th ranked Cheng Pang Wang (TPE). Magera shot five 10’s in the match, and led Wang 28-26 after the first three arrows, but was unable to hold on to the lead and Wang came back and led the rest of the match, winning with a score of 159-144.
“It felt awesome being out there,” said Magera. “My first three shots were golden, but then I got hung up on two arrows and couldn’t bounce back. I’m thrilled with my performance though. To know I can come in here and shoot 10’s like I did gave me a lot of confidence.”
Forty-eight-year-old four-time Olympian Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.), the oldest U.S. male competitor in the 2004 Olympic Games, was ranked 16th and faced 49th ranked Ron Van der Hoff (NED). Johnson got off to a strong start and led 24-21 after the first three arrows, but due to the wind, shot a one on his seventh arrow and a three on his eighth arrow and was unable to come back. Van der Hoff won the match 145-135.
“I don’t think I was making bad shots, the wind just caught me a few times,” said Johnson. “You try to time your shot, but it’s very hard with the wind.”
In the “round of 32” elimination, 64 competitors start the day with each archer shooting one match of 18 arrows at 70 meters. There are four targets on the field, with two archers shooting head-to-head on the left side and two shooting against each other on the right, alternating on each arrow. At the end of the day, 32 archers remain for the round of 16.
Archery competition is taking place at Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, and it is built on top of the ancient Stadium dating from 329 B.C. The competition runs until August 21, with the women’s round of 16 Tuesday morning and the men’s round of 16 Tuesday afternoon. Women’s quarterfinals will be held Wednesday morning and the semifinals and finals will take place Wednesday afternoon. The same schedule will apply for the men on Thursday. Team Round competition will be on Friday for the women and on Saturday for the men.
