Q&A with archer Dave Cousins on winning a World title
By Jessica Santonastaso // usolympicteam.com // October 7, 2002
For the third year in a row Dave Cousins garnered a medal at the World Field Championships; however, this time he went all the way.
Although the windy conditions at the Championship were a factor, Cousins' executed quick decision-making, enabling him to shoot his three arrows in a row to receive a score of 5-5-5.
Q1: At what age and how did you get involved with archery?
DAVE COUSINS: Archery has always been a part of my life. My Dad was an archer so he really got me involved in the sport. I am twenty-five years old and I would say that I've been shooting a bow for twenty of those years, and competing in competitions and tournaments for fifteen.
Q2: What were you thinking going into the World Field Archery Championships and how did it feel to win the gold?
DAVE COUSINS: I really wasn't expecting any surprises going into the championships. I had won the silver in the previous two World Championships so I was pretty calm going into them. I knew I needed to stay focused, shoot my shots and play the kind of game I know how to play. It felt great to win. It felt like a years worth of good decision-making, hard work and dedication were all validated.
Q3: How do you prepare yourself for competition?
DAVE COUSINS:: Physically, I train hard everyday. Archery is what I do full time, so I am totally immersed in the sport. Mentally, I do a lot of imagery. When practicing I imagine that I am actually at the championships and I am shooting for the gold at that moment.
Q4: Do you have any funny or embarrassing stories to tell?
DAVE COUSINS: Yeah, but not too many that I would like to speak about. Let's just say that I had a bad experience at the World Field Championships involving overly rich French food and a system that couldn't handle it. I'll leave it at that.
Q5: Speaking of food, what is your favorite food?
DAVE COUSINS: Probably Asian. I'm into anything that I have to eat with chopsticks.
Q6: Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?
DAVE COUSINS: I would definitely have to say Japan; their national pastime should be hosting guests. They are so generous and hospitable to all visitors that they have. I had a great time while there.
Q7: What advice would you give someone who wanted to become involved in archery?
DAVE COUSINS: I would really just tell them to have fun doing it. Do it because you enjoy it and it is fulfilling. If you want to compete in competitions there are organizations and structured learning programs to get involved in.
Q8: Do you have an inspirational quote you live by?
DAVE COUSINS: I actually just came up with one myself at the World Field Championships. We were all sitting around talking about how well people were doing and it kind of just came to me. "These things don't happen by accident." I really believe that hard work and dedication pay off. There isn't too much luck involved; the right people will win in the end
Q9: If a movie were going to be made about you, who would you like to have the lead role?
DAVE COUSINS: That's a hard one. There are a few people that come to mind. I would like the action star type role that Tom Cruise could play, but I also like the intellectual character that someone like Anthony Hopkins would portray. On the whole I think I'll have to go with Matt Damon. I enjoyed his last performance in Bourne Identity. He was a great action hero. Oh, and he's from New England.
Q10: Where do you see yourself one year from now?
DAVE COUSINS: One year from now I will hopefully be the indoor and outdoor World Champion, in addition to being ranked number one in the world. That's definitely where I would like to be.
