Getting Started in Canoe / Kayak
By Julia Cantone // usolympicteam.com // April 15, 2004
Getting started in Paddling Beginning paddlers who do not have access to a whitewater source can learn the basics of paddling at local clubs throughout the United States. Most clubs provide boats, paddles, and gear free of charge for beginners. Local clubs can be found on the USA Canoe/Kayak Web site or by calling the Sprint or Whitewater/Slalom offices. USACK also hosts a National Learn to Row Day each year, where many clubs hold open houses and free clinics and demonstrations.
While the Olympic canoe/kayak program is divided into two areas, sprint (flatwater) and whitewater/slalom, there are many other options for recreational and competitive paddling. Canoe enthusiasts can try marathon canoe racing, canoe sailing, and outrigger racing, while kayak fans can try kayak polo and rodeo contests. Both boat types participate in wildwater events, which combine elements of whitewater slalom with longer distances. Almost all disciplines offer events for juniors. Information and schedules for all disciplines can be found on the Web site.
Joining USA Canoe/Kayak Apply online to become a member of USA Canoe/Kayak and be eligible to compete in or officiate sanctioned races. You will also receive a Competition Guide with race schedules and rules and access to USACK’s Resource Center for information about training, competing and coaching.
Major Events All canoe/kayak disciplines – sprint, whitewater/slalom, marathon, wildwater, outrigger canoe, canoe polo, rodeo (kayak) and canoe sailing -- have National and World Championships for men and women.
Becoming a U.S. Olympian There are 12 sprint events and four whitewater/slalom events on the Olympic program. Canoes and kayaks have separate events, as do men and women. Qualification for the whitewater/slalom team is based on results from various races. Paddlers qualify through event such as the Pan American games and the U.S. Senior Nationals.
