Be a Part of New York City's Olympic Bid
By NYC2012 // April 30, 2004
NYC2012 is the non-profit organization leading the effort to bring the Olympic Games to New York City in 2012. Our mission involves developing the bid and organizing activities to demonstrate New York City’s enthusiasm and support for hosting the Games.
On November 2, 2002, the United States Olympic Committee selected New York as the U.S. bid city for the 2012 Olympic Games. New York is now competing against eight other cities, including Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, London, Madrid, Moscow, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro. In less than fourteen months—on July 6, 2005—the International Olympic Committee will choose the host city of the 2012 Games.
NYC2012 is offering a full-time internship position in the Research & Writing Department from the beginning of June through December 2004.
This opportunity is available to undergraduate and graduate students, and to recent college graduates. A weekly stipend of $250 is provided.
The primary project will be researching, fact-checking, writing, and editing the Candidature File (Bid Book), a 600-page document outlining NYC2012’s comprehensive plan to organize an Olympic Games in New York. The Intern will also write articles for NYC2012’s monthly newsletter (which would consist of reported pieces around New York City, Olympian profiles, sports event coverage, specific ethnic communities in the city, and history of venue sites). Other writing assignments would include brochures, web features, and event materials.
The ideal candidate would be an excellent and versatile writer with a strong background in journalism, who loves sports, history/research, the Olympic Games and New York City. He/She should be comfortable writing in a narrative style and venturing out into the city to conduct interviews and do on-site research in local archives. Because the Bid Book is due on November 15, 2004, the intern must be able to commit past that date. We would be delighted if he/she can stay on through July 2005 when the IOC selects the 2012 host city.
To apply, please immediately submit the following list of documents to NYC2012 Internship Program:
- a copy of your resume
- a cover letter detailing your interests and availability (include your start and end date)
- four writing samples that showcase your strengths and demonstrate different styles of writing
