Getting Started in Equestrian
By Julia Cantone // usolympicteam.com // April 15, 2004
Getting Started in Equestrian You don't need to own a horse to get involved in riding. Many riding schools are more than happy to give riding lessons in exchange for help around the stables. This can be the best way to start out, because it introduces you to both the sport and the work involved in caring for a horse. United States Equestrian Federation has many programs for young riders, including the USA Medal program. Riders can compete in Hunter Seat, Saddle Seat or Reining Seat Medal classes to try to qualify for the prestige of competing in their respective Medal Finals. To find competitions, you can do a search in your area on the USEF Web site or you can call to request a competition calendar from their office.
Joining USA Equestrian You can apply online to become a member of USEF and be eligible to compete in recognized competitions, including the USA Junior Olympic-Equestrian program and the National Championships. Major Events There are two major national events for senior riders: the National Championships and the Pinnacle Trophy.
Becoming a U.S. Olympian The USA is qualified for team and individuals in all three equestrian disciplines – show jumping, dressage and eventing.
