Kicking it with Emilia Morrow

Emilia Morrow, 14, of Rockville, Md., is the youngest female member of the 2006 Junior National Team. A four-time Junior Olympic gold medalist, Emilia reached the round of 16 at the Junior World Taekwondo Championships in Vietnam in July. She trains at World Taekwondo Masters under Master Ramy Latchinian.

On her return from Vietnam, Emilia answered the following 10 questions for this month's USA Taekwondo Athlete Profile...

Q1: You won two matches and reached the round of 16 at your first Junior World Championships, despite the fact that you were the youngest female member of the team. Did you feel the age difference, or do you think it worked to your advantage?

EMILIA MORROW: Even though I was one of the youngest athletes on the team, I didn’t feel out of place in my division at all. Being so young and having a chance to go to Jr. Worlds will also help me I’m sure in the future because very few people get the experience of that level of international competition.

Q2: How cool was it being at your first Junior Worlds in Vietnam?

EMILIA MORROW: It was awesome! Making Team my first year was like a dream come true and then getting to go to Vietnam for Jr. Worlds was just unbelievable. I just thought that the whole trip was such an amazing experience.

Q3: What are your goals in the sport of Taekwondo?

EMILIA MORROW: My shorter-term goals are making Senior Team and going to World Championships, but ultimately I want to make it to the Olympics.

Q4: You’re just beginning your freshman year of high school, but do you have any thoughts on what you’d like to major in at college and what career path you want to pursue?

EMILIA MORROW: I’ve always loved literature and art, but I’m counting on high school to help me decide what I want to do as a career.

Q5: Having been to the Junior Worlds, you are no doubt a role model to the younger students at your Taekwondo school. What does that mean to you? Are you comfortable with that responsibility?

EMILIA MORROW: I have always looked up to the older girls at WTM and been inspired by what they’ve done, so being in that place now is awesome. I hope that the kids now can look up to me and that my accomplishments can motivate them to keep working hard so that they can achieve what I have.

Q6: What is going on in your life right now outside of Taekwondo that has you excited?

EMILIA MORROW: Well, I mean starting school is exciting, I get to see all of my friends again that I haven’t seen since I’ve had a busy summer.

Q7: Do you own any pets?

EMILIA MORROW: In my house we have 2 guinea pigs, a tree frog, hermit crabs, and three Italian greyhounds. I’ve always had pets.

Q8: How did things go in Vietnam in relation to what you expected?

EMILIA MORROW: Watching my the female featherweight division in Vietnam I knew I had what it took to win, so when I lost my third fight I was disappointed with myself. But also a bunch of other athletes on the team made it to quarterfinals and lost, but were so close to medalling, so that was kind of upsetting too.

Q9: You’ve qualified for Senior Nationals in both the finweight and flyweight divisions. Have you determined which class you will compete in yet?

EMILIA MORROW: I’m not sure yet. I’m waiting until closer to the competition to decide, based on my weight then.

Q10: What is one thing that you can’t live without?

EMILIA MORROW: All my friends and family. They encourage me and support me so much with everything I do, I don’t know how I could survive without them
