Tar Heels lose Tarpley for six to eight weeks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A University of North Carolina sports medicine official announced Tuesday that Lindsay Tarpley, consensus 2003 National Player of the Year in women's soccer, is likely to be sidelined six to eight weeks after fracturing her right fibula in the 15th minute of the Tar Heels' 6-1 victory over Virginia Tech on September 24. Tarpley is also a 2004 Olympic gold medalist who scored the first goal in the gold medal match against Brazil, which ended in a 2-1 overtime victory.
Bill Prentice, head trainer for the Tar Heel women's soccer team, said Tarpley had suffered a complete, nondisplaced fracture of the right fibula, a bone on the outside of the leg. Because the bone was broken cleanly Prentice indicated no surgery will be required.
Tarpley's lower right leg has been immobilized in a cast to allow the break to heal on its own. The prognosis is that Tarpley could return to play for the Tar Heels anywhere from six to eight weeks from the date of the break, which would put the Tar Heels in the early stages of post-season play when she could first conceivably return for UNC.
The second-ranked Tar Heels, 9-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, continue their season Thursday when they play NC State at 7 p.m. at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C.
