Tip: Al Oerter on winning 4 Olympic gold medals in a row

Many great athletes have dominated their events in the Olympic Games, but none for as long as Al Oerter. Oerter won gold medals in the discus throw in four consecutive Games--1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968. Each time Oerter won, he set a new Olympic record. In his final Olympic competition in Mexico City, Oerter was in fourth place heading into the third round. He needed a big throw to get into the medal hunt, and got it--212 feet, six inches, which was five feet further than he had ever thrown before, and enough to clinch gold medal four.

How to win four Olympic gold medals

Tip #1 - Prepare as well as you can, as long as you can.
Preparation and practice are key and can mean the difference between a Gold and a Silver. Practicing will only better one's game, and being prepared will allow you to adapt to different situations if needed.

Tip #2 - Don't play stupid mental games with other athletes, and don't let other athletes play stupid mental games with you.
"I don't compete with other discus throwers. I compete with my own history." Don't allow competitors to play with you mind. Spending too much time concentrating on opponents takes away from concentration within your self.

Tip #3 - Don't believe press notices
The press is out there to make news. They do not always worry about whether someone is going to be offended or not. What they publish may or may not always be correct, so don't let distractions like that get in the way of your game.

Tip #4 - Right before competing get away from agents, coaches, business manager, etc.
Right before a competition you should be focusing on you and your performance. Do not let other people distract you in a time that is so crucial.

Tip #5 - When competing, enjoy it to the fullest.
Serious competition is healthy, but you have to enjoy what you are doing. Athletics should be taken seriously, but if you aren't enjoying what you are doing, what is the point.
