Colorado Springs named USOC community partner

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The United States Olympic Committee announced today that it has named Colorado Springs as the USOC's seventh Community Partner.  Colorado Springs joins Houston, Texas, Birmingham, Ala., Edmond/Oklahoma City, Okla. (University of Central Oklahoma), Chicago, Ill., the Greater Philadelphia (Pa.) region and Flagstaff, Ariz. (Northern Arizona University).

"We are extremely pleased to welcome our hometown of Colorado Springs to our team of Community Partners," said USOC Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr.  "The city and the state of Colorado have embraced our athletes and the Olympic Movement in a special way for almost three decades, and I can think of no better partner to assist us in our mission of preparing Olympic and Paralympic athletes to reach their dreams than Colorado Springs."

Organizations involved in the agreement with the USOC include the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, the City of Colorado Springs, the Colorado State Office of Economic Development, El Paso County, Experience Colorado Springs, the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation as well as USOC President Emeritus William J. Hybl.

"The U.S. Olympic Committee looks forward to continuing its positive relationship with Colorado Springs and the state of Colorado in support of America's Olympic and Paralympic athletes through this partnership," said USOC Chief of Staff Charlie Huebner. "The region's long history of supporting the USOC family and our athletes is unmatched, and we are pleased to have our hometown join the team of American cities committed to our mission in this special way."

The USOC's Community Partner Program involves each city in its mission of supporting Olympic and Paralympic athlete programs within their community including training camps, events and trials. Colorado Springs will team with the USOC to increase public awareness of Olympic and Paralympic sport in the community, and initiatives to bring USOC education and outreach programs to local schools and community youth centers.

In July 1978, the USOC relocated its headquarters from New York City to Colorado Springs, which is also home to 21 of the USOC's National Governing Bodies of Olympic and Pan American sports and the headquarters of U.S. Paralympics.  It is also the home of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

"Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region are honored to become the newest member of the USOC's Community Partner Program," said Colorado Springs Sports Corporation Chairman David J. Palenchar. "The city, El Paso County and the state have embraced the Olympic Movement and taken the athletes to their hearts for almost 30 years, and this agreement cements the tremendous bond we have with the Olympic Movement. Colorado Springs is known nationally as the place where Olympic and Paralympic dreams begin for our athletes in many sports, and we look forward to ensuring that America's best athletes have the resources and support to sustain their hopes."
