By Howard Thomas // U.S. Field Hockey Association // May 17, 2007
SANTIAGO, Chile - Argentina erupted for four second half goals to defeat the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team 6-2 at the Chile Four Nation Tournament.
The loss dropped the USA to 1-1 in the tournament standings while Argentina improved to 2-0. After a rest day on Friday, the USA will conclude round-robin play Saturday against Canada. Canada (0-1) and Chile (0-1) met in the late game on Thursday.
The USA took an early first half lead when Kayla Bashore (Shoemakersville, Pa.) knocked in a penalty corner for her first career international goal. Argentina answered back with a penalty stroke before Tiffany Snow scored her second goal of the tournament to give the USA a 2-1 lead. A penalty corner goal by Argentina sent the teams into halftime tied at 2-2.
But after an impressive first half by the USA, the world's No. 2-ranked Argentina squad quickly pulled away in the second half with four straight goals to secure the victory and the top spot in the tournament standings.
The tournament serves as a Pan Am warm-up for the four teams who will meet again July 15-29 at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of the Pan Am Games earns the continent's automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Following the Chile tournament, head coach Lee Bodimeade and the USA will send a split squad to the Champions Challenge, June 9-17 in Baku, Azerbaijan with China, England, Korea, New Zealand and host Azerbaijan. The USA women will then return home to compete in the U.S. National Championship, June 17-24 where the 2007-08 National Team will be announced.
