Port of Spain, Trinidad - Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored two first half goals as the USA Field Hockey national team men cruised to a 4-1 win over Trinidad & Tobago in game two of their four-game series.
With the win, the USA improved its record to 2-0 in the series. Following a day off on Thursday, the teams resume play with games three and four on Friday and Saturday.
The series represents a Pan American Games warm-up for the two teams as both squads prepare for the quadrennial event, July 15-29 in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of the Pan Am Games tournament receives the continent's automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games. Teams placing 2nd-5th in the men’s tournament will earn spots in one of three six-team Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in early 2008.
The USA's Nate Coolidge (Sandwich, Mass.) opened the scoring with his first career international goal before Martin scored back-to-back goals to give the USA a 2-1 halftime lead. Martin's two scores give the USA forward 35 goals in 43 international appearances.
The USA added a final field goal by veteran Rinku Bahmber (Simi Valley, Calif.) in the second half to improve to 2-0 in the series.
Following the series with Trinidad & Tobago, the USA men will compete in the USA National Championships, May 1-6 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
