(RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL) – Fencing competition moved into men’s individual epee action on Monday at the 2007 Pan American Games with 2004 Olympians Seth Kelsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Cody Mattern (Colorado Springs, Colo.) both stepping on to the strip. The two, who are roommates at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, both lost their quarterfinal contests in Monday’s action. They will look to earn a spot on the medal stand when they join Benji Ungar (New York, N.Y.) in men’s team epee competition on Friday.
Kelsey and Mattern both went 4-2 and in pool competition and were seeded five and six respectively in direct elimination action. Mattern was the first of the two to fence in first round action, taking on Jean Pierre Christian of Canada. His opening bout was a successful one as he took the match on by a 15-11 margin to move on to a quarterfinal match-up with Ruben Limardo of Venezuela. Mattern dropped his second bout, losing a 15-6 match to Limardo.
Kelsey opened competition with a first round match with Sergio Penzo of Chile. Kelsey controlled the match early on and took a 6-3 lead after the first round. He began to find his mark in the second round, moving out to a 10-4 lead before an injury caused Penzo to pull out of the match, giving Kelsey the victory. Kelsey’s win advanced him to a quarterfinal contest with Paris Inostroza of Chile. He didn’t enjoy the same success in the second contest, dropping the match by a 15-5 margin.
Women’s individual epee action will be contested on Tuesday at the Riocentro Sports Complex Pavilion Three with sisters Courtney Hurley (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kelley Hurley (Rochester, N.Y.) both competing for gold. The event is the second Pan American Games for Kelley, who was a member of the silver medal women’s epee team at the 2003 Pan Am Games.
