LAS VEGAS -- American Mariel Zagunis registered the final three touches Saturday night in topping Italy's Ilaria Bianco 15-14 in the finals of the women's sabre at the Fencing World Cup.
Zagunis, the gold medial winner at the Athens Olympics, trailed 12-10 before posting five of the last seven touches.
The Notre Dame junior-to-be and 2006 NCAA champion went 6-0 in the 109 fencer event, including a 15-12 win over France's Anne-Lise Touya in the semifinals.
Fencers from 29 countries were represented in the event, earning qualifying points for this October's World Championship in Turin, Italy.
Zagunis, third in the world entering the tournament, captured 64 points for the title to move into second place. Touya overtook Russia's Sophia Velikaia for the top spot after earning 40 points for reaching the semifinals.
Also, Korea's Hyun Hee Nam captured the foil division title with a 12-11 victory against Italy's Giovanna Trillini.
Nam dropped the first five points and trailed 8-3 before rallying to force an extra minute of fencing. She lost the priority coin flip, however, and would have dropped the match if she hadn't scored with 8 seconds left. The winner of the coin flip has priority and is awarded the match if it remains tied after sudden death.
Nam advanced to the finals with a 10-9 sudden-death victory over Italy's Ilaria Salvatori.
