USOC honors October Athletes of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee today named figure skater Alissa Czisny and speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno as its October Athletes of the Month. The USOC Team of the Month honor was awarded to the USA Women's Saber World Championships Team.

Czisny (Bowling Green, Ohio) defeated two former World Championships medalists to win the ladies title at the 2005 Skate Canada Oct. 27-30 in Newfoundland, Canada. Czisny proved she was meant to skate at the event after being added to the competition roster as an 11th-hour replacement with only four days notice. Just a week prior, Czisny took silver and skated personal best scores at the 2005 Smart Ones Skate America. With her finishes, Czisny is guaranteed a spot at the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo, Japan.

Two-time World Cup overall champion and 2002 Olympic gold medalist Ohno (Colorado Springs, Colo.), currently ranked second overall in the world, capped off an impressive month with two first-place finishes in both the 1000m and 3000m events at the World Cup II Oct. 7-9 in Seoul, Korea. In addition, Ohno finished fourth in the 5000m relay and claimed the overall crown at the event.

The USA Women's Saber World Championships Team dominated the field and claimed its second-ever team title at the 2005 World Fencing Championships Oct. 15 in Leipzig, Germany. No team scored more than 38 (of a possible 45) touches on the U.S. women throughout the competition. The squad defeated the defending champions from Russia, 45-36, for the victory and the World Team crown.  Members are Sada Jacobson (Dunwoody, Ga.), Caitlin Thompson (Portland, Ore.), Rebecca Ward (Portland, Ore.) and Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.).

USA Fencing's Sada Jacobson placed second in the women's vote. A 2004 Olympic bronze medalist, Jacobson won her third consecutive overall senior World Cup crown at the 2005 World Fencing Championships Oct. 12 in Leipzig, Germany. Her performance at the event also helped the U.S. women's saber squad earn the team title.

Third place for the women went to Chellsie Memmel (West Allis, Wis.), who won the women's all-around title at the 2005 Pan American Championships Oct. 6-9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition, Memmel tallied a score of 9.713 to capture the gold on the uneven bars, and was golden after scoring a 9.50 on the balance beam.

Second-place honors for the men went to USA Water Skiing's Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.), who set two pending world records in men's jumping during the month of October. Krueger leaped 240 feet at the Rocketman Record Jump Oct. 15 in Polk City, Fla., and then followed up with a record 239-feet jump at the McCormick Fall Cup Oct. 29-30 in Seffner, Fla. It is the fourth time this year that Krueger has set a pending world record.

Paralympic archer Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) placed third for the men after winning all five of his matches at the IPC Archery World Championships in Massa Carrara, Italy. Fabry defeated second-seed Jean-Pierre Antonios of Finland in the gold-medal competition. Prior to his podium appearance, Fabry broke five world records in the W1 recurve class qualifying round, one for every distance he shot from (30, 50, 60 and 70 meters) and a record-breaking total score of 1,378 points.

In the team category, second place went to the U.S. Women's Pan American Gymnastics Team after capturing the team title at the 2005 Pan American Championships Oct. 6-9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The squad secured a berth at the 2007 Pan American Games as a result of the competition. Leading the pack with four gold medals between the two of them was all-around champion Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone (Winchester, Mass.).

Third place in the team category went to the U.S. Junior Pan American Taekwondo Team. The 19-member squad won 16 medals, including seven gold, three silver and six bronze, at the Junior Pan American Championships Oct. 5-7 in Oranjestad, Aruba. The performance propelled the Americans into the overall team title. The U.S. also captured the men's overall title and placed second in the women's standings.
