Beijing 2008
Fencing World Championships begin

The U.S. Fencing Association announces the selection of the team that will
represent the United States at the 2005 Senior World Championships, to be
held October 8-15 in Leipzig, Germany.

The World Championships, held annually except in the year of the Olympic
Games, is the competition concluding a full year of World Cup competitions.
Fencers are seeded on the basis of rankings earned on the World Cup circuit
over the season.

Four fencers have been selected in each of six weapons - men’s epee, foil
and saber and women’s epee, foil and saber. Those athletes will compete in
the individual and team events.

This year’s team has significant depth and experience with eleven veterans
of the 2004 Olympic Games competing, including 2004 Olympic women’s saber
gold medallist Mariel Zagunis (20, Beaverton, Ore.) Four U.S. fencers are
currently ranked in the top-16 of the World Cup rankings. Many have medalled
or placed in the top eight of the Olympic Games or World Cup competition.

Results will be posted to the website www.fencing2005.com and will also be
available to media outlets. Please contact Cindy Bent Findlay for more
information.
