All four U.S. Divers advance to finals on day one of Canada Cup

MONTREAL – All four USA divers who competed in Thursday’s opening day action at the Canada Cup Grand Prix meet have advanced to the finals later this week.
Nancilea Foster (Spring, Texas) and Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) have moved on in the women’s 3-meter contest, and Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis) and David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.) advanced in the men’s 10-meter event. The finals for both events will be held Saturday.
Foster placed fourth in the prelims to move onto semifinal A, where she finished second with 305.40 points. Bryant was third in the prelims and also took third with 280.35 points in semifinal B with 280.35 points. Chinese divers won both semis, with He Zi taking semi B at 345.35 points and Li Ting winning semi A with 324.80 points. The top three divers in each semifinal advance to the finals. Also advancing were Italy’s Tania Cagnotto (309.10) and Canada’s Blythe Hartley (300.60). Cagnotto won the bronze medal at the World Championships in March, when Foster placed sixth and Bryant 10th.
In the men’s 10-meter contest, Finchum took second in both the preliminaries and semifinal A, in which he scored 482.85 points to advance to the finals. Boudia was seventh in the prelims and scored 465.45 in semifinal B to grab the last spot in the finals. World Championships silver and bronze medalists Zhou Luxin (510.70) and Lin Yue (510.80) of China grabbed the top spots in semifinal A and B, respectively. Joining them in the finals will be Canada’s Alexandre Despatie (482.60) and Russia’s Alexei Kravchenko.
The Canada Cup runs through Sunday, May 6. Friday’s action features preliminary and semifinal action in men’s 3-meter and women’s 10-meter.
Following the event, nine of the Team USA divers as well as many of the divers from other countries will head to Fort Lauderdale for the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix, which will be held May 10-13.
