By Lindsay DeWall // U.S. Olympic Committee // April 10, 2008
Statement from U.S. Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth Following 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in San Francisco by Lindsey DeWall - U.S. Olympic Committee
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – “The United States Olympic Committee commends San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Chief of Police Heather Fong and City Officials for a safe and successful Olympic Torch Relay today. We are pleased the Olympic Torch, which symbolizes the spirit and ideals of the Olympic Movement, made its way through San Francisco in the hands of so many inspiring individuals. From a global perspective, the City of San Francisco will be applauded.
“While, understandably, there may be some disappointment due to the route change, the City indicated all along that public safety was paramount. The decision to amend the route was made with the full consultation and support of the USOC and the Beijing Organizing Committee.
“This was a special day for the torchbearers, the City of San Francisco and everyone who had the opportunity to touch a part of the Olympic Movement, and we thank the City for hosting the Olympic Flame.”

Torchbearer Statements Following 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in San Francisco
Natalie Coughlin, five-time Olympic swimming medalist in 2004, 2008 Olympic Swimming Hopeful “As the last person to run the Torch, along with Willie Brown and Herschel Walker, it was incredible. To see all of the people lining the street, the supporters as well as the protesters, it was really touching. The support of the San Francisco Police Department and all the other officials was more than I expected, so I’m very grateful they were all there and worked together so well. It was an incredible experience that I’ll never forget.”
Cindy Stinger, Olympian - Team Handball, 1984, 1988, 1992 “It was an absolutely fantastic opportunity. The whole experience was above and beyond any expectations. Although we had some last-minute changes, they were to ensure everyone’s safety, and all involved were happy to go with the flow. I am truly grateful for all of the work the City of San Francisco put into this event. And, I appreciate both Peter [Ueberroth] and Mayor Newsom for communicating directly with us throughout the day.”
Kortney Clemons, Paralympic Hopeful, Iraq war veteran “It was really exciting to be a part of the Relay today. It means a lot to me because that flame is heading to Beijing, and I hope to be heading there myself in September. I’m glad all of the Torchbearers were able to be a part of this today, and I’m glad the Olympic spirit will move on.”
