2007 U.S. Olympic Assembly in Houston, Texas, Oct. 19-21

HOUSTON, Texas – The 2007 U.S. Olympic Assembly is taking place at the Hilton Americas-Houston in Houston, Texas, Oct. 19-21. This third annual assembly brings together the various members of the U.S. Olympic Committee and organizations associated with the U.S. Olympic movement in an effort to foster communication, collaboration and the development of new initiatives to support America’s athletes. This year’s assembly also includes considerable community outreach, with more than 30 U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and elite athletes visiting four local schools and the Ronald McDonald House of Houston on Friday, Oct. 19.

USOC Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr will provide the keynote address, “Amazing Awaits: Shaping the Future of America’s Olympic Movement,” along with USOC Chief Operating Officer Norman Bellingham and Chicago 2016 Chief Executive Officer Pat Ryan, to an estimated 350 members of the Olympic Family. Other panel discussions that will take place include: “The Strength of the Olympic Brand: What Makes Us Different, Makes Us Strong” and “The Fight Against Doping in Sport: The New Frontier.”

Friday’s community outreach at four schools and the Ronald McDonald House of Houston are part of the McDonald’s Passport to Play program and the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Champions in Life program. Approximately 30 athletes will participate, including gold medalist Dick Fosbury (track & field, 1968), five-time Olympian and bronze medalist Connie Paraskevin (speedskating, 1980, ’84 & cycling, 1988, ‘92, ‘96) and seven-time Paralympian Trischa Zorn-Hudson (swimming, 1980, ’84, ’88, ’92, ’96, ’00, ‘04). The athletes will speak on the values of leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship, and they will introduce students to unique games played around the world.

McDonald’s Passport to Play program takes a multi-cultural approach to physical fitness by introducing students to unique games played around the world. Friday morning, students in Houston will learn the Dutch game of Korfball, Buka Ball from Thailand, the Mexican game of Tlatchtli and Kung Fu Says from China. Friday evening, athletes will visit with the children at the Houston Ronald McDonald House, sharing their stories, talking about the Olympic ideals, taking photos and visiting with the families. Members of the media interested in attending these events should contact Lindsay DeWall at Lindsay.Dewall@usoc.org or (719) 304-4516.

In addition, athletes will visit three Houston schools for the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Champions in Life program Friday morning. The Champions in Life program involves U.S. Olympians and Paralympians interacting with youth to communicate the message that positive choices, hard work and discipline equal positive results in everyday life and in sport. The goal of the program is to bring Olympic and Paralympic role models into the lives of youth and expose them to the hardships, choices and journeys individuals may face on the path to excellence.

The Olympic Exposition will take place throughout the Assembly. The exposition allows USOC corporate partners, sports commissions, convention and visitor’s bureaus, and other interested parties to directly interact with members of the USOC and the U.S. Olympic Family.

In addition to the Assembly schedule, other meetings taking place in Houston include the USOC Board of Directors, Athletes’ Advisory Council, Multisport Organizations Council, National Governing Body Council, USOC NGB Executive Director Conference, U.S. Olympians Association and NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee.
