By Nicole Saunches // U.S. Olympic Committee // June 16, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) has expanded the Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (F.L.A.M.E) program to high school students with a one-day regional F.L.A.M.E. program hosted in conjunction with eight of its Community Partner Organizations on Saturday, June 23.
Celebrating its 14th year in August 2007, the F.L.A.M.E. program, originally targeted to college students, was developed to help educate, encourage and demonstrate to minority youth that any goal is attainable through adhering to the Olympic Ideals of Vision, Discipline, Commitment, Persistence and Focus.
Modeled after the college version, high school students, selected by school and community group administrators to participate in the F.L.A.M.E. program, will interact with Olympians and Paralympians and receive inspirational and motivational messages related to Olympic Ideals from the athletes. The students will also engage in interactive sport demonstrations and will attend a networking seminar sponsored by Adecco, a USOC sponsor and leader in networking and career development.
The eight community partner organizations that will host a regional F.L.A.M.E. program later this month include the Lakeshore Foundation, Birmingham, Ala.; World Business Chicago, Chicago, Ill.; Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Metro Denver Sports Commission, Denver, Colo.; Center for High Altitude Training, Flagstaff, Ariz.; Harris County Houston Sports Authority, Houston, Texas; Philadelphia Sports Congress, Philadelphia, Pa.; and the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee, San Francisco, Calif. These organizations have partnered with the USOC to promote a variety of Olympic- and Paralympic-related education and outreach programs and initiatives in their respective communities throughout the year, such as Junior Olympic Skills Competition, Olympians in Life, Red Ribbon Week and Olympic Week in America.
The USOC will look to expand the regional F.L.A.M.E. program for high school students to more Community Partner Organizations in 2008 and beyond.
