Powers Earns Third in Italian Individual Time Trial
By Andrea Smith // USA Cycling // September 11, 2007
Rogno, Italy (September 9, 2007) — The USA Cycling Women’s National Team scored another impressive finish as Alison Powers (Boulder, Colo./Colvita-Sutter Home-Cooking Light) took third place in the Davide Fardelli Memorial Time Trial in Italy on Sunday. A former competitive ski racer, Powers continues to show her strength on the bike as she gains international experience.
Powers completed the largely flat, 23-kilometer course in 34:10, only 48 seconds behind Switzerland’s Karin Thurig who took home the first place prize. Sara Carrigan of Australia earned a second place finish in the UCI 1.2-rated event, coming in 29 seconds ahead of Powers.
With other recent national team successes such as Kristin Armstrong’s (Boise, Idaho/Team Lipton) recent overall victory at the Holland Ladies Tour, the American women look to be on good form heading into the season’s final stretch.
The USA Cycling Women’s National Team program’s road to the 2007 UCI Road World Championships will continue with several key European races including the Tour Cycliste Feminin International Ardeche, Sept. 11-15 in France and the Giro della Toscana, Sept. 18-23 in Italy. The late-summer European campaign will help to determine the roster that will represent the United States at the world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Sept. 26-30.
