Devine's Time Trial Victory Sets Up Tarragona Win

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 21, 2007) – John Devine (Dixon, Ill./VMG Racing) took the overall victory and the USA Cycling National Development Team finished third in the team category at Volta Tarragona, a UCI category 2.12 race in the Catalan region of Spain, southwest of Barcelona. Devine captured the overall victory with a winning time of 16 hours, 25 minutes.

The seven-man American team began the week strong as Sheldon Deeny (Ft. Collins, Colo./ VMG Racing) rode in a breakaway to finish 10th in the 134-kilometer stage one from Reus to Alcanar on May 15. All six additional National Development Team riders finished with the peloton, only 17 seconds back. Deeny continued his strong start coming in 17th, only seven seconds back, in the 150-kilometer stage two from Alcanar to Salou. Devine, Chad Beyer (Phoenix, Ariz./VMG Racing), Tejay VanGarderen (Fort Collins, Colo./VMG Racing) and Colin Cares (Jackson Hole, Wyo.) also finished amongst the front group at seven seconds back.

In stage three, VanGarderen then took possession of the King of the Mountain jersey as well as the Most Aggressive Rider jersey after a gutsy performance in the 115-kilometer stage. Devine also jumped to ninth place in the overall standings with a 15th-place performance in Cambriles.

Four of the seven American riders finished in the front group, only 11 seconds behind the winner, in the 139-kilometer stage four. Devine crossed the line in sixth place, moving him up to seventh in the GC. Beyer also finished 31st, VanGarderen 35th and Deeny 40th to catapult the U.S. to third in the team standings.

The final grueling day of competition included a five-kilometer time trial in the morning and the sixth and final 117-kilometer stage in the afternoon. Devine had an outstanding finish in the infamous, steep uphill individual time trial, taking the victory by 22 seconds along with possession of the leader’s jersey. VanGarderen also had a strong ride, placing seventh. In the final stage, the entire U.S. team, which also included Chris Barton (Ojai, Calif./Vendee) and Sam Jurekovic (Boulder, Colo.), helped control the race and guide Devine to a fourth-place stage finish and the overall victory.

The USA Cycling National Development Team collected numerous jerseys at the end of the day. Devine came away with not only the winner’s jersey, but also with the Best Young Rider jersey as well as the Best Foreign Rider. VanGarderen finished second in the King of the Mountain category. The Americans displayed an incredible team effort with all seven riders, including mountain bikers Cares and Jurekovic, not only finishing, but contributing to the third place overall team finish.

The USA Cycling National Development Team will continue European action May 18 – 20 at the 1.12 Triptique Ardennais in Belgium. Closer to home, a group of USA Cycling Development Team riders will compete at Tulsa Tough, May 25-27 in Oklahoma.
