By Andy Lee // USA Cycling // May 7, 2007
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) May 7, 2007--Chris Horner (Bend, Ore./Predictor-Lotto) scored the first UCI ProTour points of the season for the United States with a fifth-place overall finish at the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland on Sunday.
Horner’s performance in the six-day event also included several trips to the podium with a third-place finish in the opening 3.5-kilometer prologue in Fribourg and a third-place effort in the 156-kilometer stage four from Charmey to Morgins on Saturday.
Horner’s efforts on Saturday put him in the yellow leader’s jersey with one stage remaining. After stage four, Horner held a slim seven-second advantage over Igor Anton Hernandez (ESP/Euskatel-Euskadi) but it was the nine-second advantage over eventual winner Thomas Dekker (NED/Rabobank) that worried him the most heading into the last stage.
In the event’s final stage, a 20-kilometer time trial in Lausanne, Horner placed seventh, 55 seconds off the pace of Dekker, to relinquish the yellow jersey and give the Dutchman the overall victory.
Horner’s performance netted him 27 UCI ProTour points. As the only American to score points on the UCI ProTour this season, the United States is now ranked 12th in the overall nation’s standings, also with 27 points.
The 2007 UCI ProTour continues with the first of cycling’s three Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia in Italy, May 12-June 3. Running concurrently with the second week of the Tour of Italy is the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Spain, May 21-27. Three Americans – George Hincapie (Greenville, S.C./Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team), David Zabriskie (Salt Lake City Utah/CSC) and Aaron Olson (Bend, Ore./T-Mobile) are scheduled to compete in the Giro.
