Devine Reliquishes Best Young Rider's Jersey after Epic Day at Tour De Georgia
By Andy Lee // USA Cycling // April 19, 2007
Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 18, 2007)—After one day in the Best Young Rider’s jersey at the Tour de Georgia, USA Cycling National Development Team rider John Devine (Dixon, Ill./VMG Racing) surrendered it to future Discovery Channel teammate Janez Brajkovic of Slovenia in a stage that left just a handful of competitors in contention for the overall win.
The reigning U23 World Time Trial Champion, Brajkovic, 23, was part of a 13-man breakaway in Wednesday’s 190-kilometer stage from Rome to Chattanooga, Tenn. that put almost 30 minutes into the remainder of the 114-rider field. Brajkovic ultimately finished third in the stage behind teammate Gianni Meersman (BEL) and David Canada Gracia (ESP/Saunier Duval-Prodir).
Although all eight USA Cycling National Development Team riders finished with the peloton, Devine remains the highest-placed national team member in the Best Young Rider classification in sixth place, 29:06 off the pace of Brajkovic.
Gracia now leads the overall classification by just three seconds over teammate Rubens Bertogliati (SUI) and American Christian Vande Velde (Boulder, Colo./Team CSC).
The third race on the 2007 USA Cycling Professional Tour continues Thursday with a 30-kilometer time trial that begins in Chickamauga and ascends to the top of Lookout Mountain.
