Men's and Women's Mountain Biking Ranked Third in the World
By Andy Lee // U.S. Cycling // April 18, 2007
Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 18, 2007)—The United States is ranked third in the world in both men’s and women’s cross country mountain biking according to the latest edition of the UCI rankings published on Monday.
In the men’s rankings, the United States is ranked third with 535 points behind Australia (705) and Canada (571).
In the women’s standings, the United States is ranked an extremely close third with 634 points behind Australia (640) and New Zealand (636).
Individually, Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./GT-Hyundai) is the highest-ranked American male in fourth place, while Mary McConneloug (Chilmark, Mass./Kenda-Seven) leads American women with a third-place ranking.
The UCI rankings are sure to see significant change following the first round of the UCI World Cup in Houffalize, Belgium this weekend where the world’s best cross country athletes will converge for competition for the first time in 2007.
International ranking points are the primary factor in determining how many start positions countries receive at the 2008 Olympic Games. A top-five nation’s ranking in the men’s standings will yield the maximum of three start positions, while a top-four ranking for the women will result in the maximum of two entries. A nation’s ranking will be determined by a combination of 2006 and 2007 rankings. At the end of 2006, the United States was ranked fourth in the men’s standings and sixth in the women’s standings.
