Bussey, Finlayson Advance to Finals in Individual Boats
By Diana Wright // U.S. Olympic Committee // July 26, 2007
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Canoe/Kayak competition opened today with the men’s individual kayak and canoe qualifying races. In the men’s K-1 1000m, 2004 Olympian Andy Bussey (Kailua, Hawaii) took third in his heat with a time of 3:55.72 to advance to Friday’s final. In the men’s C-1 1000m race, Rob Finlayson (Gainesville, Ga.) placed fifth in his heat with a time of 4:53.72. He took second in the men’s C-1 1000m semifinal with a time of 4:20.69 to advance to Friday’s final.
Because of the low number of entries in the team boat events, no heats were contested in men’s K-2 1000m, K-4 1000m, C-2 1000m, or women’s K-4 500m. On Friday, the Women’s K-4 500m boat of Lauren Austin (Seattle, Wash.), Katie Hagler (Gainesville, Ga.), Ariel Farrar (Washington, D.C.) and Jennifer Burke (San Diego, Calif.) will vie for a trip to the medal stand. All four are competing in their first Pan American Games.
Friday will also see Pan Am Games rookies David Petrovics (Washington, D.C.) and Sam Ritchie (Washington, D.C.) in the Men’s K-2 1000m, Alejandro Schwedhelm (Washington, D.C.) and Amniel ‘Pepe’ Naranjo (Miami, Fla.) in the men’s C-2 1000m, and Bussey, Wolski, Eric Abbott (Honolulu, Ha.) and Danny Ching (Redondo Beach, Calif.) in the men’s K-4 1000m.
Tomorrow’s action includes 500m qualifying races in the individual boats. Two-time Olympian Bartosz Wolski (New Britain, Conn.) will race in the men’s K-1 500m and Jennifer Burke will race in the women’s K-1 500m. Finlayson will race again in the men’s canoe event, the C-1 500m. Finals for all 500m races, including the team boats, will be contested on Saturday.
