Rhode takes gold in women's double trap
Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) won the gold medal in women's double trap at the Markopoulo Shooting Center Wednesday afternoon. Battling Lee Bo Na of Korea through the middle rounds, Rhode was perfect through the ninth round, then missed one target in the 10th and 11th rounds to fall one behind Lee. A misses by Lee in the 12th and 14th rounds gave Rhode the lead back, but Chinese shooters Li Qingnian and Gao E emerged to threaten Rhode. It wasn't until the final round that both Chinese faltered, each missing one trap and opening the door to the gold for Rhode.
Cyclist Barry takes silver in women's time trial
Dede Barry (Boulder, Colo.) earned the silver medal for the U.S. in the cycling women's time trial Wednesday afternoon at the Vouliagmeni Olympic Centre. Barry was less thaqn 25 seconds off the gold-medal pace. The other U.S. entry, Christine Thorburn (Davenport, Iowa), was fourth, 20 seconds shy of the bronze.
Giddens claims silver in women's slalom canoe/kayak
Rebecca Giddens (Green Bay, Wis.) was fast and clean on her final run down the Helliniko Olympic Canoe/Kayak Centre course, and that earned her the silver medal in women's slalom kayak. Giddens posted a score of 214.62 to take the lead with three paddlers left, then watched as the next two boats were assessed gate touches or were pushed off line by the boiling water, costing them valuable seconds and moving Giddens up the medal chart. The final boat down the course, Elena Kaliska of Slovakia, was the fastest, finishing with a score of 210.03. The medal is the third for the U.S. in women's slalom kayak in the past four Olympic Games. Dana Chladek earned bronze in Barcelona and silver in Atlanta. Giddens placed seventh in Sydney.
