Boxing names 2008 U.S. Olympic Team

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for boxing wrapped up over the weekend with 11 boxers nominated to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. Those winning their respective weight class included Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), who with the victory in the flyweight division can become the first boxer in 30 years to compete in two Olympic Games after going to Athens, Greece in 2004. Chirstoher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.), also makes the team and would become the oldest U.S. boxer in Olympic Games history at 32.
2008 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team 106 lbs: Luis Yanez, Duncanville, Texas 112 lbs: Rau’shee Warren, Cincinnati, Ohio 119 lbs: Gary Russell, Jr., Capitol Heights, Md. 125 lbs: Raynell Williams, Cleveland, Ohio 132 lbs: Sadam Ali, Brooklyn, N.Y. 141 lbs: Javier Molina, Commerce, Calif. 152 lbs: Demetrius Andrade, Providence, R.I. 165 lbs: Shawn Estrada, Downey, Calif. 178 lbs: Christopher Downs, Fort Carson, Colo. 201 lbs: Deontay Wilder, Tuscaloosa, Ala. 201+ lbs: Michael Hunter, Las Vegas, Nev.
A slot at the Olympic Games must still be earned by all 11 boxers. They get their first chance at the 2007 AIBA World Championships, Oct. 17-Nov. 3, in Chicago where the top-eight boxers in nine of the 11 weight classes and the top-four in the heaviest two weight classes earn an automatic berth to the 2008 Olympic Games. The U.S. team will gather in Colorado Springs beginning Sept. 17 in preparation for the event.
