2007 Junior Olympic National Championships Preliminary Bouts Continue at Marquette, Michigan

(MARQUETTE, MI) – Twenty-five preliminary bouts were contested during the afternoon session of the 2007 Junior Olympic National Championships. Young boxers in the flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions entered the ring in the hopes of advancing to tomorrow’s quarterfinal round.

The bantamweight started with a match up between 2007 National Silver Gloves Champion, Brian Nichols (Pearl, Miss.) and Issac Torres (Mission, Texas). The two were separated by two points at the end of the first round with Torres leading 4-2. Torres pulled away in the second round and although Nichols scored five points in the third, he was unable to earn enough points after receiving an eight-count. Torres won 15-11.

Marquis Moore (Ft. Washington, Md.) and Julio Miramontes (Pueblo, Colo.) battled it out in the lightweight division. Moore took an early 9-4 lead at the end of the first round and never looked back. He lead by eight at the end of the second and increased his lead to 10 by the end of the bout, winning 20-10.

The highlight of the welterweight bouts was Meko Bonner (Cleveland, Ohio) versus Joshua Ortega (Houston, Texas). The two started off strong with Bonner having a 10-6 edge over Ortega after the first round. The pace remained constant in the second, with Bonner scoring five points and Orgeta, 3. Ortega came out with force in the third scoring six points, but it was not enough to defeat Bonner who won 18-15.

Middleweights Kavika Audiv (Las Vegas, Nev.) and 2007 Aliyev Cup bronze medalist, Alex Lopez (Boise, Idaho) also met in the ring this afternoon. Audiv lead after the first round 4-1 and 11-6 after the second. Lopez was no match for Audiv who scored 10 points in the third round and went on to be victorious by a score of 21-9.

Bouts will resume tonight with the evening session of boxing beginning at 6 p.m.
