2007 Junior Olympic National Championships Underway in Marquette, Michigan

(MARQUETTE, MI) – The 2007 Junior Olympic National Championships opened competition at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. today. Seventeen preliminary round bouts were contested in the light flyweight, flyweight, light bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, light middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

There was much excitement in the featherweight division with Ulixwa Abelino (Omaha, Neb.) defeating Willie Jones (Durham, N.C.). Abelino took an early 4-1 lead after the first round. Jones fought back, tallying six points in the second round to trail by two going into round three. Abelino stepped it up in the third scoring nine points and beating Jones by a final score of 18-10.

Also in the featherweight division, Andre Keys (Tacoma, Wash.) defeated Jonathan Garcia (Pharr, Texas) in an exciting come-from-behind victory. Garcia was leading by three points at the end of the first round, but Keys rallied back and was within one point by the end of the second. Scoring seven points in the third round and holding his opponent to only one, Keys was victorious by a score of 14-9.

The females also got into the action this evening with Lateisha Darden (Wilmington, N.C.) defeating Stephanie Han (El Paso, Texas) in the lightweight division. It was a close bout with Darden having the largest lead after the first round when she lead 3-0. The score was tied 5-5 after the third with Darden winning the tiebreaker 11-10.
