The 36th Edition of the Junior Olympic National Championships to be Contested in Marquette, Mich

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The 2007 Junior Olympic National Championships will make a return to Marquette, Mich., for the second straight year, marking the 36th edition of the event. Over 200 of the nation’s elite junior Olympic boxers will face off for a national championship, June 26-30, at the Superior Dome on the Northern Michigan University campus. The United States’ top 15 and 16-year-old boxers will convene in Marquette for the event, which consistently showcases the future stars of boxing.

Two reigning champions will return for a second straight year with 2006 95-pound titlist Fabian Cervantes (Pacoima, Calif.) and 2006 Pinweight (101 lbs) champion Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) both vying for their second straight Junior Olympic titles. Byrd has already enjoyed a successful 2007, winning a gold medal at the elite international event, the Aliyev Cup. 2007 Silver Gloves champions, bantamweight Brian Nichols (Pearl, Miss.); featherweight Xavier Montelongo (Los Angeles, Calif.); light welterweight Pedro Sosa (Bronx, N.Y.); light heavyweight Rudy Puga, Jr. (Salinas, Calif.); and super heavyweight Nicholas Kisner (Glen Burnie, Md.) will all compete for their second national title of 2007 in Marquette. In addition to his national success, Montelongo grabbed a silver medal at the Aliyev Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, as well.

In its 36th year, the Junior Olympic program continues to provide a critical pipeline for USA Boxing’s future stars. Seven of the nine 2004 Olympians were Junior Olympic champions and all nine competed in the event. The program continues to produce future champions, often immediately upon their advancing to the senior level as evidenced by 2006 Junior Olympic National Champions Roberto Marroquin (Dallas, Texas) and Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.). Marroquin earned a berth on the 2007 Pan American Games team in his first year as a senior boxer while Molina not only took home the U.S. Championships light welterweight division title, but also the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament award.

For the third straight year, the females will compete with the male boxers, and two returning champions will vie for a second straight national championship in Marquette. Reigning flyweight champion Ashley Barela (Denver, Colo.) has moved down to the light flyweight division in 2007, and will battle for her second consecutive JO title. Defending bantamweight titlist Angela Bradford (Fort Worth, Texas) will look to duplicate her 2006 feat in Marquette as well.

The future stars of the sport will compete for a prestigious junior Olympic title at the Superior Dome on the Northern Michigan University campus, June 26-June 30. Preliminary bouts will be contested at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and noon and 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday with semifinal action taking place at noon on Friday and championship round action being contested on Saturday at 11 a.m.
