(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - A full day of U.S. Championships preliminary round action will be contested on Sunday. The day began with 49 afternoon bouts at the University of Colorado Springs – Colorado Springs. The light flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight division all took the ring in the first session of the day.
2004 Olympic runner-up Diego Hurtado (Reno, Nev.) won the lone light flyweight bout of the day, earning a second round stoppage of Noel Solis (Queens, N.Y.). Hurtado took control early in the bout, grabbing a 10-2 lead after the first round. He more than doubled his advantage in the second stanza to win a stoppage outscored victory at the 1:41 mark of the round. He will face Luis Rangel (Scottsdale, Ariz.) in second round action on Monday.
Two former junior champions recorded first round victories in the bantamweight division, beginning with 2006 Junior Olympic National champion Samuel DiPace (Las Cruces, N.M.). DiPace faced off with David Tangjian (Kapolei, Hawaii) in preliminary action, and he turned up the heat early in the bout. DiPace’s efforts earned him a 20-3 lead at the midway point in the point, and he continued to add on to his lead in the third, before winning the stoppage at the 1:13 mark of the round. 2006 National Champion and 2007 Pan American Games team member Roberto Marroquin (Dallas, Texas) recorded his first U.S. Championships victory on Sunday as well, but his came in much closer fashion. Marroquin battled Roman Morales (San Ardo, Calif.) in his opening bout of the tournament. He took the early lead in the bout, holding Morales scoreless in the first round before moving out to an 8-5 advantage. Marroquin held the same three-point lead as the fourth round began, and a strong fourth round pushed him to a 20-10 victory over Morales.
Gary Russell III (Capitol Heights, Md.) completed a trio of boxers making their U.S. Championships debut and Russell did so in impressive fashion in lightweight action. He flew out to a 13-1 lead at the end of the first round and continued to control the contest in the second, taking a 20-2 advantage into the third before winning the stoppage at the 1:08 mark of the round. 2006 Under 19 National Champion Jerry Belmontes (Corpus Christi, Texas) enjoyed a victorious opening bout as well, winning a 35-13 decision over Isaac Arasato (Honolulu, Hawaii). Belmontes grabbed the early lead and never let go, holding an 18-6 advantage at the midway point of the bout. He extended his lead over the final four minutes of action, winning the final decision.
Two women’s lightweight bouts were featured in Sunday’s session as Althea Martin (Atlantic City, N.J.) faced off with Katonya Fisher (Visalia, Calif.) in a close preliminary round contest. Martin took a slim early lead, holding a one-point advantage after each of the first two rounds. She doubled her lead in the third, enjoying an 8-6 edge as the final round began. Martin held on over the final two minutes to win a 12-9 final decision. Cherie Retamozzo (Garden City, N.Y.) recorded the second women’s victory, taking a 30-13 victory over Eike Bivona (Staten Island, N.Y.). Retamozzo took a two-point lead after the first round, and built on it throughout the bout. She held a 22-11 lead as the bell rang for the final, and moved out to a 30-13 final victory.
In welterweight action, 2006 Cadet World Championships silver medalist Luis Arias (Milwuakee, Wis.) enjoyed a late comeback to pull out a 23-22 victory over Greg Carter (Waterbury, Conn.). Carter led throughout the first three rounds, taking an 18-14 advantage into the fourth round. Yet Arias managed to overcome his deficit in the final two rounds of boxing to win the one-point decision. 2006 Under 19 National Champion William Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) put an early end to his preliminary bout with Eric Garcia (San Francisco, Calif.). Jackson took the early momentum and never let it go, moving out to a 23-6 advantage at the midway mark of the bout. He continued to add to his point total in the third round, earning the mandatory stoppage victory at the :57 mark of the round.
The light heavyweight division was the fifth weight class to step through the ropes, and it featured the upset of the afternoon session as Aleem Whitfield (Geneva, N.Y.) defeated 2005 National Champion William Rosinsky (Richmond Hills, N.Y.). The bout was forced to paper scoring, and at the end of four rounds, Whitfield emerged with a 2-1 victory. 2004 Golden Gloves national champion DeRae Crane (Davenport, Iowa/NMU) won his 2007 U.S. Championships opener with Gevonte Davis (Gulfport, Miss.).
After a close first round, Crane began to pull away in the second stanza, enjoying an 11-5 lead at the midway point. He doubled his lead over the final two rounds to win a 22-8 victory and advance to the second round.
The super heavyweight division rounded out the afternoon session with eight preliminary round bouts. Defending champion Jonte Willis (Tacoma, Wash.) recorded his first victory of the 2007 edition, winning a 21-7 decision over Andrae Carthon (Northridge, Calif.). Willis moved out to a commanding 13-1 lead at the end of two rounds, and the trend continued over the final four minutes with Willis moving out to an 11-7 final victory. Two-time super heavyweight national champion Mike Wilson (Central Point, Ore.) won his second bout of the tournament, defeating 2006 National Golden Gloves champion Felix Stewart (Columbus, Ohio). The bout was close throughout with Wilson taking a small one-point lead at the midway point of the bout. He extended it to two at the end of three rounds before moving out to a 16-6 final decision.
Preliminary action will be contested in the flyweight, featherweight, light welterweight, middleweight, and heavyweight divisions at 6 p.m. MST.
