Quarterfinal Action is Contested at the 2007 Eastern Trials in Cocoa, Florida

(COCOA, FLA.) – 2007 Eastern Trials action moved into quarterfinal competition on Thursday at the Cocoa Sports Expo Arena in Cocoa, Fla., with all of the quarterfinal winners advancing to the semifinal round on Friday evening.

Boxers from eight different weight divisions took the two rings in Thursday’s quarterfinal competition, opening with four featherweight contests. Two-time national champion Mark Davis (Cleveland, Ohio) made his Eastern Trials debut in the first bout of the evening and he displayed the skills that has taken him the top of the featherweight division. Davis faced off with Kashon Hampton (Philadelphia, Pa.) in his opening bout and out-boxed his less experienced opponent from start to finish. Davis built up a 20-point lead early in the third round to cause the mandatory stoppage and advance to the semifinal round. He will battle 2005 Golden Gloves champion Efrain Esquivais (Torrance, Calif.) for a spot in the championship round. On the opposite side of the bracket, Chazz McDowell (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) earned a first round stoppage over Darrel Martin (Baltimore, Md.) to set up a semifinal match-up with Jario Delgado (Denver, Colo.). Delgado won an 11-2 decision over Wanzell Ellison (Newark, N.J.) to move on to the medal round.

The lightweight division took part in their third day of action with four quarterfinal contests. The United States Marine Corps’ Todd Dekinderen (Jacksonville, N.C.) earned the first lightweight berth in the semifinal round, winning a 13-8 decision over Carlos David Arce (Los Angeles, Calif.). Dekinderen will take on 2004 Eastern Trials champion Miguel Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio) in semifinal action. Gonzalez won a disqualification victory over Roberto Vargas (Santa Ana, Calif.) in their quarterfinal contest to advance. In other lightweight action, Angelo Ward (Baltimore, Md.) recorded an 11-5 decision over Julius Leegrand (Cleveland, Ohio) to move on to the semifinal round. Ward will battle Chris Green (Asbury Park, N.J.) for a championship round berth on Friday. Green won his third straight contest on Thursday night, taking a 12-10 win over Bryan O’Connor (Bronx, N.Y.).

An experienced veteran and a 2006 Junior Olympic champion both moved on to light welterweight semifinal action with quarterfinal wins. Keith Redding (Cincinnati, Ohio) is looking to return to the top of the amateur ranks in Cocoa, and he recorded his second victory on Thursday, taking a 15-13 win over Alan Knight (Orlando, Fla.). Redding will battle junior star Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) in semifinal action on Friday.
