Thirty Boxers Advance One Step Closer to a Eastern Trials in Cocoa, Fla.

(COCOA, FLA.) – The third day of 2007 Eastern Trials preliminary round boxing was contested on Wednesday at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center with 31 boxing hopefuls advancing to the quarterfinal round.

The lightweight division boxers took the ring for the third time on Wednesday night and eight boxers moved on to quarterfinal action with preliminary round wins. 2004 Eastern Trials champion Miguel Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio) competed for the first time at the 2007 edition, facing off with Michael Perez (Newark, N.J.) in a lightweight match-up. A strong first round gave Gonzalez immediate momentum, and he held an 11-3 advantage after two rounds. Perez couldn’t overcome his early deficit in the final two stanzas and Gonzalez won a 21-10 final decision to advance to quarterfinal competition.

A hometown boxer thrilled the crowd in light welterweight action as Joseph Elegele (Melbourne, Fla.) put a quick end to his bout with Jared Robinson (Sumter, S.C.). An Elegele right hand floored Robinson one minute into the first round, bringing his throng of supporters to their feet and ending their light welterweight preliminary bout. Elegele will hope for the same success when he faces Jaime Salidvar (Palmhurst, Texas) in the quarterfinals. Salidvar also recorded a stoppage victory, winning a third round outscored stoppage victory over Israel Han (El Paso, Texas) to advance in the tournament.

Jesse Lubash (Munhall, Pa.) recorded another exciting stoppage win in his welterweight preliminary contest with Jerry Banks, Jr. (Saginaw, Mich.). Lubash dropped Banks to the canvas at the :53 mark of the third round to cause the stoppage, and win the preliminary contest. Lubash will face off with Gabriel Pham (Kissimmee, Fla.) in quarterfinal action on Thursday. Pham enjoyed a quick night in his preliminary contest as well, recording a stoppage victory over Frank Hawwat (Hardwood Heights, Ill.) at the :43 mark of the first round.

The middleweight division closed the action on Wednesday night with seven preliminary contests. Two-time Junior Olympic National Champion Dominic Wade (Largo, Md.) traveled south to Cocoa chasing his first senior title, and he took his first step in preliminary action on Wednesday. Wade built up a 20-point lead in the final seconds of the second round, to win a mandatory stoppage and advance on to the quarterfinal round.

Quarterfinal action will commence at 7 p.m. on Thursday with bouts in the featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions.
