Five Olympic style Boxers Earn First Round Victories at the 2007 Eastern Trials

(COCOA, FLA.) – The 2007 Eastern Trials kicked off on Monday with five light welterweight bouts at the Cocoa Expo Center in Cocoa, Fla. A Florida native opened the tournament with an impressive first round stoppage in his preliminary contest. Clarence Booth (Auburndale, Fla.) recorded a stoppage of Earnest Butts (Macon, Ga.) at the 1:28 mark of the opening stanza to move on to second round action.
The second light welterweight preliminary contest went the distance with Jaime Salidvar (Palmhurst, Calif.) recording a 20-15 victory over Kenny Barroso (Teaneck, N.J.). Barroso took the early lead in the bout, holding a 9-7 advantage after two rounds, but Saldivar gained control in the third. The Texan took his own two-point lead into the final round and more than doubled it over the final two minutes to take earn the first round win.
Former Junior Olympic champions took part in the next two bouts, beginning with 2005 Junior Olympic champion Raymond Serrano (Philadelphia, Pa.) and his first round contest with Tony Walker (Cincinnati, Ohio). Walker made a successful light welterweight debut in contest with Serrano, recording an 18-15 decision over Serrano. It was Serrano grabbing the early momentum in the bout, taking a 6-3 lead after the first round. Walker pulled it to a nine all tie at the midway point and the two remained deadlocked at the end of three. The Cincinnati boxer won the decisive fourth round, outscoring Serrano 5-2 to win the final decision and advance to the second round.
A second JO champ took the ring in the fourth bout of action as 2006 champion Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) battled Curtis Johnson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) in the fourth contest of the night. Molina controlled the contest, enjoying high scoring second and third rounds en route to a commanding 18-6 at the end of three. Molina continued to pour on the points in the fourth, winning a 28-6 decision over Johnson.
A hometown boxer closed the first day of boxing with Alan Knight (Orlando, Fla.) taking on Lonnie Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the final light welterweight first round bout. Jackson took a commanding 15-3 lead after two rounds, but Knight came flyweight back in the third to pull the score to 17-12 with one round remaining. Knight went on to win the bout on disqualification in the fourth round.
