USA Badminton Team Gains Momentum at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The USA Badminton Team continued to gain momentum today in competition at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Today saw action in women’s doubles, men’s doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles.

In the morning action in Pavilion 4B of the Riocentro Convention Center, Jamie Subandhi (Westminster, Calif.) and Joanne Chen (Irvine, Calif.) defeated Mariana Arimori and Fabiana Arimori, of the host country Brazil, two games to none (21-8; 21-9).

Eva Lee (Orange, Calif.) and May Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif.) also defeated Canada’s Val Loker and Sarah Macmaster two games to none (21-18; 21-18).

The men’s doubles team of Howard Bach (San Francisco, Calif./Orange, Calif.) and Bob Malaythong (Rockville, Md./Orange, Calif.) made quick work of Jamaica’s John Martin and Emelio Mendez winning two games to none (21-9; 21-9).

The only blemish for the U.S. in the morning was the two games to one defeat that the men’s doubles team of Eric Go (Palo Alto, Calif./Orange, Calif.) and Nicholas Jinadasa (Long Beach, Calif.) suffered to the rackets of Guatemala’s Pedro Yand and Erick Anguiano (15-21; 21-18; 16-21).

In the evening session Subandhi (Westminster, Calif.) only needed 15 minutes to dispose of Shari Watson of Barbados. Subandhi won two games to none (21-14; 21-11).

A passionate crowd made for a spirited match between Go and Guilherme Pardo of Brazil. Go was able to capture victory in two games (21-16; 21-17).

Jinadasa became the first American to fall from the 2007 Pan American Games badminton tournament when he fell in singles to Canada’s David Snider in two games (14-21; 16-21).

Lee continued her march through the women’s singles bracket, winning in two games against Cuba’s Solangel Guzman (21-14; 21-12).

Badminton action will move into the quarterfinals tomorrow, Monday, July 16, 2007. All five disciplines (women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles) will see action. All USA Badminton athletes except for Jinadasa are still alive in the tournament. Chen was eliminated in women’s singles on Saturday, July 14, but is still alive in women’s doubles. The men’s doubles team of Go (Palo Alto, Calif./Orange, Calif.) and Jinadasa (Long Beach, Calif.) were eliminated this morning and Jinadasa was eliminated from men’s singles this evening, but Go is still alive in men’s singles.
