Emmons and Scherer Tied for First Place

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 2, 2008) – After the second day of competition at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Shooting (Airgun), Matthew Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) and Stephen Scherer (Billerica, Mass.) are tied for first place in Men’s Air Rifle. Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) is still leading the way for Women’s Air Rifle, while Brenda Shinn (Riverside, Calif.) and Daryl Szarenski (Saginaw, Mich.) are on top for pistol.

In Men’s Air Rifle, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Emmons, who is vying for his third berth to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, is tied for the top spot with West Point Cadet Scherer with a total score of 1400.1.

“It’s going to be a fight no matter what,” said Emmons. “Today I felt a whole lot better than I did yesterday. I wasn’t seeing things real well yesterday and didn’t know where the shot was going to go. I didn’t feel like I had a whole lot of control, but I did a couple things different today and felt a lot better. I feel I am in a good place to have a good match tomorrow.”

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member and two-time Olympian Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.) is in third place for Men’s Air Rifle with a score of 1394.1.

It’s a close race for Women’s Air Rifle with Sowash, the 2007 Pan Am silver medalist, continuing to lead the way with a total score of 994.1. Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.), a 2004 Olympian, and Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.), the 2007 World Cup USA bronze medalist in air rifle, are right behind Sowash in second and third place with total scores of 993.7 and 992.3 respectively.

Shinn remains in first place for Women’s Air Pistol with a total score of 949.1. Three-time Olympian Rebecca Snyder (Grand Junction, Colo.) is in second with 946.1 and Theresa Meyer (Dearborn, Mich.) continues to hold the third spot with a score of 937.2.

In Men’s Air Pistol, two-time Olympian and USAMU member Szarenski is in first place with a total score of 1353.9, while 2004 Olympian Turner is in second with 1351.6. Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) is right behind Turner in third place with a score of 1351.2.
