PAN AM GAMES - Turner Remains Golden; U.S. Shooting Takes Five Medals

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (July 17, 2007) – The U.S. Shooting Team was on fire at the Pan American Games today, grabbing five medals, including two gold. Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.), who earned the 50 Meter Pistol title yesterday, was crowned the Men’s 10 Meter Air Pistol Champion today at the Deodoro Sports Complex. The shooting competition will run through July 21.
“It is very exciting and always a goal when you are coming in to these (competitions) to try and win, but to actually achieve this is very satisfying,” said Turner who also snagged the title at the 2003 Pan American Games.
Also medaling in the Men’s 10 Meter Air Pistol was U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Thomas Rose (Central Point, Ore.) who earned a bronze medal in the event.
The United States also grabbed double medals in the Men’s 50 Meter Rifle Prone event. Thomas Tamas (Columbus, Ga.) took home a gold medal while Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) joined him on the podium with a silver medal. Both are members of the USAMU.
The final U.S. medal of the day was awarded to Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska.) in the Women’s Trap event. Cogdell took home a bronze medal in her Pan American Games debut. The U.S. Shooting Team currently owns 11 medals, including five gold, and will look to add to the count tomorrow during the Men’s Double Trap Final.
