Nine Crews Take Command at Pan American Games Trials

Nine crews moved one step closer to making the Pan American Games team after winning the first final at the 2007 Pan American Games Trials for rowing on Wednesday at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Finals are contested in a best two-out-of-three format, with the second finals taking place on Thursday. If a different crew wins tomorrow’s race, the two winners will square off in a third final on Friday.

Potomac Boat Club’s Jamie Schroeder clocked the winning time in the first final of the men’s single sculls. The U.S. representative in the single sculls at the 2006 World Championships finished in a 7:13.98 to advance to Thursday’s second final. Princeton Training Center’s Warren Anderson and Vesper Boat Club’s Jonathan Burns took the second and third slots, respectively, to join Schroeder in tomorrow’s race.

In the first final of the women’s single sculls, Potomac Boat Club’s Reilly Dampeer finished five seconds ahead of Princeton Training Center’s Julie Nichols in an 8:01.38. Pocock Rowing Center’s Nicole Sylvester crossed the line third to advance to Thursday’s second final.

Princeton Training Center’s Francis Cuddy and Deaglan McEachern led the pack in the men’s double sculls, finishing in a 6:39.16. California Rowing Club’s Elliot Hovey and Jon Greer finished second in a 6:42.12, advancing to tomorrow’s finals. Third-place finishers Kent Smack and Brett Wilkinson of Riverside Boat Club withdrew from competition and will not race in the second final.

Potomac Boat Club’s Margaret Matia and Sarah Trowbridge finished first in the women’s double sculls event. The duo crossed the line in a 7:22.72, more than a second ahead of Saugatuck Rowing Club’s Amanda Kendrick and Catherine Starr. Potomac Boat Club’s Mae Joyce Gay and Liz Mygatt will join the first- and second-place finishers in Thursday’s second final.

In the first final of the men’s lightweight double sculls, Malta Boat Club’s Andy Liverman and Richard Montgomery defeated the competition in a 6:37.54. In a close race for second, California Rowing Club’s Gavin Frase and Robert Zechmann crossed the line 0.39 seconds ahead of Fairmount Rowing Association’s Matthew Henwood and Andrew Grzybowski. All three crews will advance to Thursday’s second final.

Vesper Boat Club’s Carey Brezler and Hannah Moore won the first final of the women’s lightweight double sculls. The boat crossed the line in a 7:25.57 to advance to Thursday’s second final. Sara Bates and Margaret Duggan of New York Athletic Club finished second in a 7:27.32. Penn AC’s Rebecca Smith and Maria Picone placed third in the race and will compete in tomorrow’s second final.

Three boats in the first final of the men’s pair advanced to the second final. Caspersen Training Center’s Daniel Beery and Patrick O’Dunne clocked a in a 6:41.54 to defeat Penn AC’s Micah Boyd and Ted Farwell. The Caspersen Training Center duo of Chris Callaghan and Troy Kepper edged out teammates David Banks and Paul Daniels to advance to Thursday’s second final.

In the first final of the men’s lightweight four, the Caspersen Training Center crew of Matt Muffelman, Pat Todd, Tom Paradiso, and Colin Farrell crossed the line in a 6:11.08. The Caspersen Training Center crew stroked by Andrew Bolton finished second in a 6:14.82. Undine Barge Club will join the two Caspersen boats in tomorrow’s second final.

The Caspersen Training Center crew of Tyler Winklevoss, Cameron Winklevoss, Sebastian Bea, and Gabe Winkler came out on top in the first final of the men’s four. The crew finished in a 6:13.88, ahead of the Vesper Boat Club crew stroked by Aaron Marcovy. All three boats will advance to Thursday’s second final.

In total, 10 events are being contested at the trials including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s four and lightweight men’s four, with the winners earning spots on the team that will represent the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games July 14-19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, pending United States Olympic Committee approval. In addition, the men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight will be selected from the above events. For both the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, the winners of the single and double will join the second-place finisher from the single to make up the crew. For the men’s eight, the winners of the pair and four will join the second-place finisher from the pair to make up the crew.
