Finals Set at Pan American Games Trials

Finals are now set at the 2007 Pan American Games Trials for rowing after the conclusion of racing on Tuesday at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Potomac Boat Club’s Jamie Schroeder, a 2004 Olympian in the men’s four and the U.S. representative in the single sculls at the 2006 World Championships, clocked the fastest time in the semifinals of the men’s single sculls in a 7:11.72. Vesper Boat Club’s Jonathan Burns finished less than a second behind in a 7:12.39. Princeton Training Center’s Warren Anderson won the first race by seven seconds in a 7:14.57, finishing seven seconds ahead of Union Boat Club’s Steve Tucker. The four scullers advanced to Wednesday’s final in the men’s single.
In the first repechage, or second-chance race, of the women’s single sculls, Pocock Rowing Center’s Nicole Sylvester crossed the finish line in an 8:07.55 to advance to the final. Melissa Rice of Whitemarsh Boat Club won the second race in an 8:07.82, defeating Undine Barge Club’s Shannon Kaplan. The winners of today’s repechages will join heat winners Julie Nichols and Reilly Dampeer in Wednesday’s final.
California Rowing Club’s Elliot Hovey and Jon Greer advanced to the final of the men’s double sculls, finishing in a 6:48.04 in the first repechage. Potomac Boat Club’s William Greer and Mike Malone clocked a 6:54.49 to win the second race. The duo finished ahead of Undine Barge Club’s Jordan Smith and Ferdinand Bergen. The winners of today’s events will race Princeton Training Center and Riverside Boat Club in the final.
In the repechage of the women’s double sculls, Saugatuck Rowing Club’s Amanda Kendrick and Catherine Starr advanced to the final, finishing in a 7:35.70. Ann Holmes and Beth Greene of Vesper Boat Club clocked a 7:39.40 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of Riverside Boat Club’s Heather Moon and Marika Page. The top finishers advanced to the final, where they will take on the two heat winners from Potomac Boat Club.
Racing in the first of two repechages of the man’s pair, Caspersen Training Center’s David Banks and Paul Daniels clocked a 7:05.77 to win by more than five seconds. In the second repechage, Caspersen Training Center’s Chris Callaghan and Troy Kepper edged out Penn AC’s Stephen Kasprzyk and Patrick Godfrey by 0.18 seconds. The Caspersen boat failed to make weight, but after winning their protest, Callaghan and Kepper’s victory was confirmed. In addition, officials advanced the Penn AC duo to the finals as part of the decision. The three crews will join the Caspersen Training Center duo of Dan Beery and Patrick O’Dunne and the Penn AC crew of Micah Boyd and Ted Farwell in Wednesday’s final.
Two boats in today’s repachage of the lightweight men’s double sculls advanced to the final. California Rowing Club’s Gavin Frase and Robert Zechmann finished in a 6:57.46 to lead the pack. Fairmount Rowing Association’s Matthew Henwood and Andrew Gryzbowski clocked a 6:58.87, finishing almost two seconds ahead of Undine Barge Club’s Erik Reitinger and Sam Saylor. The crews will race the two heat winners from Malta Boat Club in the finals.
Finals are contested in a best two-out-of-three format, with the first finals taking place on Wednesday and the second finals taking place on Thursday. In events in which different crews win the first and second final, a third final will be held on Friday. Racing begins at 7 a.m. each day.
In total, 10 events are being contested at the trials including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s four and lightweight men’s four, with the winners earning spots on the team that will represent the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games July 14-19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, pending United States Olympic Committee approval. In addition, the men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight will be selected from the above events. For both the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, the winners of the single and double will join the second-place finisher from the single to make up the crew. For the men’s eight, the winners of the pair and four will join the second-place finisher from the pair to make up the crew.
