Eli Bremer Wins Gold in Modern Pentathlon Bronze at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Secure Olympic Berth; Bowsher Finishes Sixth

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) fulfilled a dream today of qualifying for an Olympic Games with his gold medal performance in the modern pentathlon competition at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“It feels great,” said Bremer.  “It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was about four years old and today’s the day.  It didn’t come together the last quad and I’ve been training so hard for it and it’s just awesome.  As an athlete, there is just nothing like hearing your national anthem being played and knowing that you did for your country the best you could possibly do.  I couldn’t be prouder.  I’m very patriotic.  I love my country and it’s just very emotional to see my flag getting raised up above all others.  It’s so much work that has been done, not just by me, but by everybody around me, coaches, my wife, family, friends my sponsors the Air Force, ; everybody that’s been supportive of me.  It feels great.”

Bremer started his day off with a shoot of 168 for 952 modern pentathlon points.  He then won 25 of his 40 fencing bouts for a score of 940.  He had the fastest swim time of the field with a 2:05.63 for 1,296 points.  His ride garnered him 1,144 points and his run of 9:48.50 earned him 1,048 points for a total score of 5,340 total modern pentathlon points.

Despite feeling a bit under the weather, Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) placed sixth with 5,200 total modern pentathlon points.  Bowsher shot a 182 for 1,120 modern pentathlon points.  He had a rough day in the fence winning only 11 of his 40 matches scoring only 660 points.  Bowsher had the second fastest swim time to Bremer with 2:08.95 for 1,256 points.  His ride earned him 1,144 points and his run of 9:55.01 garnered him 1,020 points.

In competition yesterday, Monday, July 23, Michelle ”Mickey” Kelly (Chatham, N.Y./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) won the bronze medal and qualified herself for the 2008 Olympic Games in the second North American qualification slot.  Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 11th in large part do to a poor riding score brought on by her horse’s refusal to jump.
