Dennis Bowsher Wins Mens Title at the 2007 USA Pentathlon National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. as Women Set to Compete Tomorrow

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Coming off the best performance of his career with a World Cup silver medal in Drzonkow, Poland Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) picked up where he left off earning the title of 2007 USA Pentathlon National Champion today in Colorado Springs, Colo.  Bowsher earned a total of 5,672 total modern pentathlon points posting individual discipline scores of 1,180 in shooting; 1,036 in fencing; 1,260 in swimming; 1,160 in the ride and 1,036 in the run.  Niul Manske (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) finished with the silver medal with 5,504 total modern pentathlon points and Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) got the bronze with 5,456 total modern pentathlon points.

The women will compete tomorrow, Sunday, June 10.  The event is being staged at the U.S. Olympic Complex and the Norris-Penrose Events Center.  The U.S. Olympic Complex is hosting the shooting, fencing and swimming events, while the Norris-Penrose Events Center is the venue for the running and riding.

The competition time schedule for the 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior and Junior National Championships is as follows:

Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Springs, Colo.) elected not to compete in the 2007 USA Pentathlon National Championships to concentrate on improving her fencing, which she is doing this week at an elite fencing club in Portland, Ore.  This will not affect Taormina’s status for the 2007 Pan American Games or the 2007 World Modern Pentathlon Championships.

The male and female winner of the 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior National Championships will automatically earn a spot on the USA Pentathlon Team that will compete at the 2007 World Modern Pentathlon Championships in Berlin, Germany, August 15-22.  The 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior National Championships is also designated as a domestic event in the International Pentathlon Point System (IPPS), giving athletes the opportunity to earn valuable IPPS that will count toward an athlete’s international ranking which factors into eventual U.S. Olympic Team selection for 2008.

For the 2007 USA Pentathlon Junior National Championships, the top three female and male winners may earn the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2007 Junior Modern Pentathlon World Championships, September 25-30 in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
