COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fifteen year-old Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark./Colorado Springs, Colo.) stunned the field today at the 2007 USA Pentathlon National Championship, winning the gold medal with a total of 5,528 total modern pentathlon points. Michelle ”Mickey” Kelly (Chatham, N.Y./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) finished in second place with 5,476 total modern pentathlon points.
Isaksen got her day off to a great start and never looked back, finishing first in the field in the first three disciplines of shooting, fencing and swimming. She posted individual discipline scores of 1,084 in shooting; 1,108 in fencing; 1,160 in swimming; 1,188 in riding and 988 in the run. Her performance earned her the title of 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior and Junior National Champion.
"It feels awesome," said Isaksen. "I worked really hard and I'm just ecstatic at this point. It's a great day for me. I'm really happy with my shooting as it was a personal best."
In competition yesterday, Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) won his second USA Pentathlon National Championship Title, scoring 5,672 total modern pentathlon points. Chris Hassoon (Danville, Calif.) was crowned 2007 USA Pentathlon Junior National Champion, while Sam Sacksen’s (Somerset, Pa./Colorado Springs, Colo.) point total will make him eligible for the 2007 World Junior Modern Pentathlon Championships, despite not registering for the Junior division of the USA Pentathlon National Championships.
"The season has been really good for me so far," said Bowsher. "I haven't really had a bad competition, just a couple of misfortunate rides. I had a good ride in Drzonkow (Poland) and a good competition here today. Pan Am Games is a main goal for me right now and I feel good going into it."
