By Cecil Bleiker // U.S. Olympic Committee // March 25, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in the best performance of her modern pentathlon career today, winning the silver medal in the second World Cup stop of the season in Cairo, Egypt. Taormina posted a total of 5,512 total modern pentathlon points to reach the podium in a loaded competitive field that included the 2006 World Champion, the 2006 World Cup Finals Champion and the 2004 Olympic gold medalist. Each of the World Cup winners in 2006 also competed. Despite a rough start in the shooting (31st place), Taormina battled throughout the day to climb the ladder. Following the fence she was in 28th place. A first place time in the swim moved her up to 18th place overall. A perfect score in the ride moved her up to 12th place and finishing first in the run moved her all the way to second place.
