Pentathlon Qaulifies Three Women for Finals of World Cup #2 in Cairo, Egypt

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – All three U.S. women competing in the second World Cup of the 2007 Modern Pentathlon season in Cairo, Egypt performed well enough in today’s semifinal round to advance to Saturday’s finals. Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Emily Shertzer (Hershey, Penn./Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the team with 4,172 total modern pentathlon points each to finish 15th and 16th place respectively in Group A. Mickey Kelly (New York, N.Y./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) finished in 17th place in Group B with 4,096 total modern pentathlon points.

With all three U.S. women qualifying for the event final, today proved to be one of the best days in recent USA Pentathlon history on the World Cup circuit.

Fence - 11V - 19D (712 points)
Swim - 2:07.9 (1388 points)

Emily Shertzer - 16th - 4172 points
Shoot - 171 (988 points)
Fence - 12V - 18D (744 points)
Swim - 2:34.58 (1068 points)
Run - 9:47.55 (1372 points)

Group B
Mickey Kelly - 17th - 4096 points
Shoot - 164 (904 points)
Fence - 13V - 17D (776 points)
Swim - 2:23.70 (1196 points)
Run - 10:25.14 (1220 points)

The U.S. men will compete tomorrow, Friday, March 23 in semifinal action in Cairo. Competing for the U.S. will be Sam Sacksen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) and Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army).

Sacksen is coming off a career high 17th place World Cup finish in the first World Cup of the season in Mexico City, Mexico and a second place finish off of the NORCECA Junior Pan American Championships in Cuba.

The men ‘s final will take place Sunday, March 25 in Cairo, Egypt.
