Team USA Wins Medal Count at Finnish Open, Stevens Earns First European Gold Medal

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – U.S. athletes earned six medals during the final day of competition on Sunday at the Finnish Open, to finish the B-Level Tournament with the highest medal count for any country in the two-day event.

Team USA beat out second-place Turkey with four gold medals to three and 16 overall compared to Turkey’s four. Host nation Finland finished the event with eight medals, including one gold.

Reigning Pan American Games Champion Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) earned his first European gold medal in the 81kg division on Sunday, winning all four of his matches by ippon (instant win).

Among Stevens’ wins was a third-round victory over Tyler Boras (CAN) – the third win for the Stevens against Boras in as many weeks after beating the 2006 Pan Am silver medalist at the Sweden Open in Boras last week and the Rendez-Vous Canada two weeks ago in Montreal.

Stevens’ JMJC teammate Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / 66kg) also competed in the finals. After three early round wins, Flores beat James Millar (GBR), a Rotterdam Super World Cup silver medalist in the 60kg division, by ippon (instant win). Flores then lost in the finals to Colin Oates (GBR) who also won gold in Sweden.

Taylor Takata (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) also fought Oates, but lost their semifinal match. Takata dropped down to the bronze medal match where he beat two-time U.S. Open medalist Michael Popiel (CAN) to place third.

Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) placed second in the 63kg division – her first European medal since moving up from 57kg earlier this year.

Malloy won her first three matches in the division before losing in the final to Johanna Ylinen (FIN), a two-time 2007 World Cup medalist.

Emily Lilly (Camarillo, Calif. / Sawtelle Judo) also competed in the 63kg division, but lost to Emilie-Claude Leroux (CAN) and Hannah Sinfield (GBR).

Former Junior World Team member Hannah Martin (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) had her first taste of major senior success in the 57kg division where she won a bronze medal with a 3-1 record. Martin’s only loss during the day came in the semifinals to two-time World Cup medalist Yahaira Aguirre (ESP), but beat Julia Bezko (LTU) in the bronze medal match.

Janine Nakao (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) also fought for a bronze, but placed fifth, losing her final match to Nina Koivumaki (FIN), a fifth-place finisher at the World Championships in September.

Top-ranked junior Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) also competed in the division, winning her first match, but losing the next two.

Adler Volmar (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training site at North Miami) added a bronze medal in the 100kg division to his Sweden Open bronze. Volmar nearly advanced to the final, but, after two preliminary wins, he lost a Golden Score (overtime) match in the semifinals to Rauli Karpanen (FIN). Volmar went on to beat Gabor Potyi (HUN) in the bronze medal match.
