Five athletes to watch at USA Wrestling

Sam Hazewinkel, Greco-Roman, 55 kg/121 lbs. Hazewinkel, who placed third at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, won the Haparanda Cup this past weekend in Haparanda, Sweden. Hazewinkel won the 2005 and 2007 U.S. Nationals. His father, Dave, and uncle, Jim, were members of the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman teams.
HAZEWINKEL DATA: High School: Pensacola, Fla. (Pensacola Christian Academy); College: Oklahoma; Residence: Norman, Okla.
Iris Smith,women’s freestyle, 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Smith won the Haparanda Cup this past weekend in Haparanda Sweden. Smith, a 2005 World champion, won the Sunkist Kids International Open earlier this season. She was fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. She is a member of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

Jermaine Hodge, Greco-Roman, 55 kg/121 lbs. Hodge placed second at the Haparanda Cup in Haparanda, Sweden. Hodge placed fourth in the 2007 U.S. World Team Trials. He wrestles for the U.S. Army.
HODGE DATA: High School: Hillsborough, N.C. (Orange). Residence: Colorado Springs, Colo.
Brandon McNab, Greco-Roman, 66 kg/145.5 lbs. McNab, who placed second at the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials at 74 kg/163 lbs., has dropped down a weight class this season. McNab missed nearly all of the 2007 season because of an injury. He placed fifth at the Haparanda Cup this past weekend in Haparanda, Sweden. He competes for the U.S. Army.

Leigh Jaynes, women’s freestyle, 55 kg/121 lbs. Jaynes made her first U.S. World Team in 2007, qualifying at 59 kg/130 lbs. Jaynes is dropping down to the Olympic weight class of 55 kg/121 lbs. this season. She placed third this past weekend at the Haparanda Cup in Haparanda, Sweden. She wrestles for the U.S. Army.
