Casey Burgener Places Fourth at the 2008 Good Luck Beijing Weightlifting Olympic Test Event in Beijing, China
By USOC.Staff // U.S. Olympic Committee // January 28, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Casey Burgener (Bonsall, Calif./Colorado Springs, Colo.), the lone U.S. representative competing at the 2008 Good Luck Beijing Weightlifting Olympic Test Event, just missed the podium, finishing fourth today in the men’s 105+kg weight class. Burgener, snatched the second highest weight total with 180kg and clean and jerked 210kg on his first attempt for a total of 390kg. Burgener missed clean and jerking 220kg, which, had he made it, would have moved him up to the silver medal.
An additional benefit of competing in this Olympic Test event for Burgener will be the fact that the 2008 Olympic Games Weightlifting venue will be familiar to him. The Good Luck Beijing events serve as the dress rehearsals for the Olympic venues prior to the 2008 Olympic Games which begin August 8, 2008.
Casey’s father Mike Burgener (Bonsall, Calif.) also represented USA Weightlifting at this 2008 Good Luck Beijing Weightlifting Olympic Test Event, serving in a familiar role as his son’s coach.
This event was the first competition for Burgener, the top ranked U.S. male weightlifter, since the 2007 World Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, September 17-26. At the World Championships, Burgener posted the top finish for the U.S. Team, placing 11th with a total of 400kg (182kg in the snatch and 218kg in the clean and jerk).
