Hamman, recovering from a slight injury to his back entered the Titan Games with only just over two weeks of preparation, but still delivered a podium performance which gave first-time weightlifting spectators a thrill.
“The crowd was a big part of it," Hamman said. "There was no way I planned on going up that high today, but when the crowd wanted, I had to give it a try. I wasn’t going to come out and do just 485 pounds after listening to the crowd, I had to give 500 pounds a try,” said Hamman.
Weightlifting is traditionally viewed by an audience in silence. Hamman trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Complex with the mindset that he was going to need to be prepared to lift with the distractions of loud crowds and other sports taking place.
Hamman was the final competitor of the evening, finishing just moment’s after USA Wrestling’s Rulon Gardner, Olympic gold-medalist, defeated Kazakhstan’s Georgiy Tsurtsumia.
“I walked around just before my competition and saw Rulon over there wrestling and said ‘sweet.’ Here I am in the middle of the arena with Rulon wrestling. It was a very big and exciting moment for me,” added Hamman.
The last lifter to compete, Hamman had already walked away with first-place in his weight class and lead his team to victory over Hungary while his teammate, Oscar Chaplin also defeated his Hungarian opponent taking first in the 85 kg/187 pound weight class. Chaplin lifted a total of 340 kg/748 pounds to Gyorgy Ehrlich of Hungary’s 300 kg/660 pounds.
Hamman shared the men's “Ultimate Titan” award with Yoel Romero, the Cuban wrestler who defeated USA’s Cael Sanderson on the first night of competition.
Capturing second place in the 94 kg/207 pound weight class was Robert Murphy of Team USA. Murphy was defeated by Venezuela’s Julio Luna, with 55 pound weight difference. Murphy captured second over Hungary’s Sandor Dioszegi for a 22 pound advantage.
In the 105 kg/231 pound weight class, Team USA’s Peter Kelley, captured second place by lifting a total of more than 121 pounds over his opponent, Viktor Vatai of Hungary. Kelley was defeated by Ecuador’s Boris Burov, who lifted nearly 50 pounds over Kelly’s total 355 kg/781 pounds. However, Kelley beat first-place winner Burov in the snatch with more than 49 pounds.
