Barb Lindquist nominated for WSF Sportswoman of the Year

The Women’s Sports Foundation has announced the nominees for its annual Sportswoman of the Year Award. The Foundation recognizes an individual and a team sportswoman each year for exceptional performance over a 12-month time span, based on new records and world championships won. The prestigious award has been given since 1980.

Triathlete Barb Lindquist (Casper, Wyo./ Stanford) has been nominated for individual honors .

Lindquist started off the 2002 season by capturing the Australian Accenture Series crown and the Australian Sprint title. In doing so, she became the first non-Aussie athlete to win a triathlon on Australian soil. She placed on the podium seven times during the World Cup Series, including a win at the World Cup in Ishigaki, Japan. On the U.S. Tour, she won the Life Time Fitness Challenge, defeating both men and women to pick up the richest prize purse in short course triathlon history. She placed second at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Triathlon World Championships in Cancun, Mexico and was the first American finisher (sixth overall) at the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Georgia. Lindquist medaled in 18 out of 19 events she entered in 2002 and had eight gold medals. She received numerous honors for the year, including Inside Triathlon’s Overall Triathlete of the Year and Triathlete Magazine’s Triathlete of the Year. The U.S. Olympic Committee named Lindquist Olympic Athlete of the Month for July and she won the 2002 USOC Triathlete of the Year Award. Lindquist finished the 2002 season ranked second in the world and second in the United States.

In 2003, Lindquist captured the Accenture Race Series in Australia, becoming the first American to win an Australian triathlon series. She won the ITU World Cup in Japan in April and placed fifth at the ITU World Cup/St. Anthony's Triathlon in Florida. In June, Lindquist won the Baker’s Breakfast Cookie ITU International Triathlon in Bellingham, Wash., and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, Calif, bringing her to a 5 for 5 record atop the podium in 2003.

Lindquist had 15 podium finishes in 2002-2003 and is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.
