Team USA Quotes Monday, August 27 morning session
Women's discus qualifying
Suzy Powell (Modesto, CA): Very disappointing day. I didn't qualify. I can't put my finger on it.
Rebecca Breisch (Chula Vista, CA): It was just a disappointment. No excuses. I just didn't throw good.
Cecilia Barnes (Fresno, CA): I haven't done much this summer, so I'm not really disappointed at all. I haven't done much training up until now, so it's my fault.
Women's 100m hurdles first round
Michelle Perry (Santa Clarita, CA): The race went good. I was in correct position that I needed to be. I didn't press at all and I am excited about that. I have two more rounds left and I am ready to rock and roll.
Virginia Powell (Los Angeles, CA): My race was a little rusty. It could be faster. I could have had a faster start, a faster middle. It was my first race since Paris (in early July). I was really satisfied. I've been doing my best to get ready. Now that I have the first race out of me, I think I will do better.
Lolo Jones (Baton Rouge, LA): I had a bad start and I was playing catch up the whole time. I've been here for a while, 14 days, I've been sitting around in the hotel. Now, I got that bad race out of my system. My body is ready. The problem is I'm used to racing two to three times a week. I haven't in two to three weeks. I'm sitting around and I'm not used to that. I live in Louisiana, it's exactly the same here as it is there. I think I should have an advantage.
Nichole Denby (Champaign, IL): (On the stumble at the final hurdle) I think I rushed by take-off a little bit. I just smashed into it. I was coming on strong. I was feeling strong. I tried to contain myself. I think I did a pretty good job of it.
Women's long jump qualifying
Tianna Madison (Los Angeles, CA): It feels good to get the last spot in the finals. I've got to work on getting height and extending the landing in my jump at the same time in the finals. I was getting height on one jump, and getting extension on the other.
Grace Upshaw (Santa Monica, CA): It was horrible. I fouled my best jump and I struggled to get on the board. It's just a runway issue. I'm ready to jump far.
Brittney Reese (Gulfport, MS): It was hot. It felt kinda good to be out there, like Mississippi weather. I fouled on my fist attempt. I didn't realize the track was so fast, so I had to move back a little bit. I wasn't sure how I'd do, since I haven't competed since June [at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships]. I was kind of nervous because 6.75 [the automatically qualifying mark] is a big jump.
Rose Richmond (Bloomington, IN): It didn't go the way I wanted it to go. It was some technical issues. Things happen for a reason.
Men's high jump qualifying
Jim Dilling (Fond du Lac, WI): It's a different level over here, so I'm going to shut it down for the year and get ready to come back for the [Olympic] Trials.
Jamie Nieto (Chula Vista, CA): I'm kind of upset. I felt really good today. I can't believe that many people just jumped 2.29. Of all the years I've been going to major championships, .26, .27 would make it in. You might be one of the last guys in, but you'd make it in. It's a good place to jump, good competition. I just wish I had jumped a little higher.
Jesse Williams (Raleigh, N.C.): There are no words that can describe how upset I am right now. I am really disappointed with that performance. I really felt like I was in medal contention before the meet, and I didn't even make it to the finals. I am very disappointed. I didn't do well in USAs, and I barely got on the team. I thought I was gonna step it up here. I had some really good practices. I just imploded today. Choked.
Women's 400m hurdles first round
Tiffany Williams (Columbia, SC): I felt pretty good. I think I relaxed too much. I wanted to go out and run a good technical race. Usually I switch [lead legs] once, but I switched twice. Me and my coach will work it out before the next round.
Sheena Johnson (Los Angeles, CA): "My main goal was just to qualify for the next round. The wind on the backstretch was really strong, and it threw off my steps a little bit. About 150 meters into the race, I could tell we were going slower. Usually I like to run as slow as possible to get to the next round.
Nicole Leach (Los Angeles, CA): It was a very hard race in lane 9, especially in your first world competition. I'm just glad I qualified to the next round. Now, I know what I need to work on. I didn't hit all my steps. I did a lot of reaching. I need to get comfortable, back in the pattern. I hadn't run in a while.
